My craft seminar- Queens University of Charlotte, January 9th

Prosepoempalooza: A celebration of diversity located within the prose poem

Line breaks, schmine breaks. Conventional, schmunventional. The prose poem bounces to the beat of its own drum. A drum that is worn.  A drum that is withered. A state-of-the-art drum, finely-tuned to the exact specifications of high-tech master craftsmanship. A drum that rum-pum-pums its way through literary genres without saying excuse me. A hushed drum. A thunderous drum. A drum that may not even be a drum.

This seminar will focus on three (of several) elements that can be found within the prose poem: the surreal, deadpan tone, and circular narrative. We will examine prose poems in which these elements are found and analyze how these elements work together, and independently, to create the poem. We will also begin an exercise in which we write our own prose poems. This seminar will be poetic. This seminar will be fun. Rum-pum-pum. Trust me.
